World Cup of Darts: Josh Rock and Daryl Gurney inspire Northern Ireland to glory over Wales | Darts News
Northern Ireland won a historic victory at the Betvictor 2025 World Cup, beating Wales 10-9 on Sunday in a dramatic final in Frankfurt.
Josh Rock and Daryl Gurney – The fourth seeds of the tournament – melted in tears after hearing their nerve to make the story with a 10-9 defeat by Jonny Clayton and Gerwyn Price.
After dragging 7-5, the triumphant pair retaliated to lead 9-7, to miss four match darts for the title at 9-8, allowing Clayton and Price-Champions in 2020 and 2023-to force a decision maker.
The decisive leg saw Rock and Gurney launching a leg of 11 platforms to relaunch the challenge of Wales to become the sixth nation to claim the glory of the World Cup.
“We have made the history of Northern Ireland and we are so proud as a team,” said an emotional rock.
“As a team, we were fantastic and we fought hard.”
Gurney added: “I would like to congratulate Wales, he shows the class of the Welsh team to stay on stage and congratulate us.
“Jonny and Gezzy are legends of the game, I think they will continue and win great titles this year.
“Josh’s power score was incredible and I was there to clean the finish; I was never missing the double Eight to win the title.
“I am so proud of Josh and myself, I put a higher esteem on this title that all the individual events that I have gained.”
Northern Ireland began the day with an 8-5 victory against the Republic of Ireland in the quarterfinals before beating the host of the 8-1 Germany host in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Wales beaten Hong Kong 8-4 in the quarter-final before overcoming the Netherlands 8-5 in the semi-finals.
“We congratulated these two [Rock and Gurney]”Said Clayton.” To be fair to Josh and Daryl, they stole the blocks in the last stage.
“GEZZY is a class act, I am a man proud to have a teammate like him.”
Price added: “We started very slowly, trying to get into the game was really difficult. The testimony of the Northern Ireland team, Josh’s score was incredible and we could not follow them.
“At 9-9, we gave ourselves a chance but they were a little better than us and they deserve it.”
