An athletics coach has been authorized to abuse his son – the Olympic gold medalist Jakob Ingebrigsen – in a high -level trial that seized Norway.

Gjert Ingebrigtsen, 59, was found guilty of a minor assault leader against his daughter Ingrid, 19, and will avoid prison after being sentenced to 15 days suspended.

He was ordered to pay around £ 730 in compensation after being found guilty of having struck her with a wet towel.

During the trial, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, 24, who won gold at 5000m in Paris 2014 and 1,500m in Tokyo 2021 – said that his childhood had been tainted with fear and manipulation.

Prosecutors had asked for a prison sentence and a half for the accused, who was accused of an alleged campaign of domestic violence towards Jakob and his younger sister.

Gjert Ingebrigtsen pleaded not guilty, telling the court that he had been a too protective father who was trying to help his ambitious children.

His lawyers said that the decision meant that there was “no evidence to show that he had created a continuous fear in his children”.

A member of his legal team Heidi Reisvang added: “There are no winners in this case. He hopes that one day he will again have contacts and a relationship with his family.”

The family has taken importance in the Norwegian media through the Televier Televised Telege Series, which took place from 2016 to 2021.

This has shown that the father led his three sons Jakob, Filip and Henrik, who were all involved in athletics events.

But in 2022, the trio had separated and the following year, they co-signed a chronicle of newspapers which accused him of physical violence and intimidation, which led to a police investigation.

A spokesperson said Gjert Ingebrigsen had been “relieved” by the decision, but it is not clear if the accusation plans to appeal.

Meanwhile, a lawyer representing Jakob and Ingrid said they were happy that the court believed certain elements of the case.

The trial, which lasted almost two months, heard a long list of witnesses – including family members, sports officials and other athletes.

Ingebrigtsen now leads Narve Gilje Nordas, the Jakob rival in 1500 m.
