Stephen Bunting storms to Players Championship 18 title in Leicester | Darts News
Stephen Bunting won his fourth title of 2025 with a victory commanding 8-5 against Jermaine Wattimena at the 18 players in Leicester.
`The Bullet ” was in a sensational form throughout the tournament, with an average of more than 100 in six games, because he added World Series to his titles in Bahrain and Copenhagen and a triumph of the European tour in April.
Bunting started with a 6-2 victory against William Borland, followed by 6-3 victories against Ian White and Ritchie Edhouse. His remarkable performance came with an average of 106.43 against Alan Soutar in the last 16.
In the quarter-finals, Bunting overcomed a deficit of 5-4 to defeat the star of CnoCechia, Karel Sedlacek, before passing in front of the Dave Chisnall’s seeded in the tense semi-final, sealing the victory with a brilliant 12 post leg.
The final saw Wattimena take an early advance, but Bunting responded with a Five leg burst, including 164 and 156 cases, to increase 5-1. Wattimena joined to fill the gap at 6-5, but Bunting sealed the title with a superb 11-Darter.
By thinking about his victory, Bunting expressed his pride in his coherence and his resilience, noting his improved form after losing six finals in 2024. He credited his experience as the Premier League and his recent victories to strengthen his confidence.
Wattimena, despite the end of her first classification title, impressed a solid race that puts him in the running for the world’s match next month. He started with an average of 105 against Darryl Pilgrim and beat Carl Sneyd and Josh Rock to reach the last 16.
His narrow victory over Rock sparked a series of decisive victories against Ryan Searle, Mike de Decker and Niels Zonnerd, winning the finalist prize of £ 10,000. Zonneveld also had a notable race, beating Martin Schindler and James Wade to reach the semi-finals.
Dave Chisnall rebounded after an early outing Tuesday to reach the semi-finals, beating Martin Lukeman, Mervyn King and Cam Crabtree. Crabtree has appreciated his best race since July 2024, making the quarter -finals alongside Sedlacek, Decker and Benjamin Reus.
Other remarkable performances came from Ross Smith and Danny Noppert, who displayed averages of 111 and 110 respectively. Ryan Searle struck two 108 averages before falling to Wattimena, while big names like Gerwyn Price, Gary Anderson and Dirk Van Duijvenbode have undergone an early outing.
