A few hours after the president of the UFC, Dana White, announced that the heavyweight champion Jon Jones retired from the mixed martial arts, the newspaper Albuquerque said that Jones is faced with another legal problem. A criminal assignment accuses Jones of leaving the premises of a traffic accident in the New Mexico in February, and he faces an accusation of crime for the incident. He must appear before the court on July 24 for a deposit creation.

Albuquerque police responded to information reporting an accident in February when they approached a woman in the passenger seat of one of the cars involved. The woman said Jones was the driver of the vehicle and fled the scene on foot. She called Jones and the police noted that the man at stake – who did not answer direct questions concerning his identity – “seemed to be strongly intoxicated and made declarations involving his ability to use the deadly force by third parties”.

Jones would have been questioned in person a few days after the accident and said that the car’s woman had left her house in a bit of drunk before the accident. Later, she corroborated this account and said Jones was the last person she remembered to have driven her car.

Legal problems and controversies litter Jones’ career, which was legendary inside the octagon. He faced suspensions, eliminating the UFC classification and several titles for his drug screening tests, a conviction with flight offense, an arrest of domestic violence and other problems.

There is no immediate indication that Jones’ retirement is linked to the latest charges.

Jones has many UFC records in several divisions and has been largely considered to be the greatest mixed martial artist in the world throughout his career. He accumulated 28 victories for a single defeat with a non-counter through a career that started in 2008. Jones held the UFC Light Heavyweight championship twice and defended his title 11 times through the two Reigns, and he won and defended the heavyweight championship before the end of his time in the cage.

The frustration among the fans abounded before Jones’ retirement, because the uncertainty around the management of his career led more than 130,000 people to sign an online petition to strip him of his truck title. White had insisted that Jones fight the acting heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall this year, but the fight has remained without reservation for a long time.

White announced as part of Jones’ retirement that Aspinall is now the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion.

“For you, fans. It is time to advance this heavyweight division,” said Aspinall on social networks. “An undisputed active champion.”
