British and Irish Lions: Owen Farrell shock call up confirmed after Elliot Daly ruled out, Fin Smith to start against Waratahs | Rugby Union News
Owen Farrell’s call to the British and Irish Lions team was confirmed, Elliot Daly was excluded from the rest of the tour with a forearm fracture.
Head coach Andy Farrell also appointed Smith at the end of Smith at the end of South Wales of the South Waratahs-end of Smith. Live on Sky Sports at 11 a.m. (accumulation from 10 a.m.).
Hugo Keenan of Ireland, Blair Kinghorn of Scotland and Ben Earl in England will make their lions debut.
Owen Farrell, 33, has not played international rugby since he took a break after the 2023 World Cup and will join his fourth tour with the Lions, having been part of the 2013, 2017 and 2021 editions.
After 16 years at Saracens, Farrell joined French Side Racing 92 last year, but had injuries before returning to the Saracens this summer.
He did not play competitive rugby for nine weeks after having undergone a concussion, but in May – when Andy Farrell appointed his team of Lions – he confirmed that his son was in the running.
Daly suffered the injury after tackling Jock Campbell in the second half before going to the hospital in a scarf to undergo a radiography.
England Utility Back started the two games in Australia back after having become an entry at the end of the day in the programming against the Reds in place of the Hugo Keenan Evil.
“It is heartbreaking for the group that Elliot’s tour is over. It is a legend of the lions who added so much to the group on and off the field in recent weeks and on three tours,” said head coach Farrell.
“Owen will come now and add to our options and bring her own lions experience to the group.”
The Tadhg Beirne of Ireland will be captain of the Lions team who will face the Waratahs while Maro Itoje will get the weekend, while Earl has appointed No. 8 alongside the Henry Pollock and Josh Van Der Flier flanks.
“Congratulations to Tadhg who will head the team on Saturday evening – and also to Blair, Hugo and Ben who will do all their debut in Lions,” said Farrell.
“The matches arrive thick and fast now when we will face a Waratah team that will want to make its mark.”
