Germany Women 2 – 0 Poland Women
Eight times European champions, Germany began its search for a first title in euros in 12 years with a 2-0 victory against Poland.
It took until the second half for the blocking to be broken Friday evening in St Gallen, but the goals of Jule Brand and Lea Schuller won the team of Christian Wueck the victory they deserved.
In truth, it could have been more if it was not an inspired Polish team, appearing in the first major tournament of their 44 years of history.
Germany – which had scored four or more in each of their last five games – have been frustrated in the first half. Poland has sometimes defended their lives, restricting their opponents estimated at only two shots on the target.
The fact that Captain Giulia Gwinn wounded injured before the break hides things for Germany, while the lack of Schuller, the stop time, undoubtedly contributed to increasing the intensity of the mid-Down of the head coach Wueck.
But everything he said to his players helped them finally establish his head. In the five minutes after restarting, Brand cut the right, moved the ball to the left and pulled in the upper left corner, leaving Kinga Szemik without any chance.
Sjoeke Nusken from Chelsea should have extended the advance just after the hour, but was tied inexplicably wide from the interior of the six yards box, before Schuller plants a free head on the bar.
The latter compensated him in a minute after the said luck, however, guiding a head at home after the brand chose it with a crossing of the right.
The greatest chance in Poland de la Nuit occurred after 81 minutes, when Ann-Katrin Berger produced a truly pointed stop to switch Ewa Pajor’s head over the bar. But while they were defeated in the night, conceded twice against the Germans should fill them with confidence for the rest of the tournament.
