Wimbledon officials apologise to players after line-calling technology turned off in malfunction on Centre Court | Tennis News
Wimbledon officials apologized to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Sonay Kartal after an embarrassing dysfunction of the new electronic line of line system in the central court.
After an investigation, the organizers admitted that the technology had been disabled by mistake on a section of the court for a match, the error being only possible when a Kartal shot which clearly missed the basic line was not called.
If the call had been correct, he would have given Pavlyuchenkova an advance of 5-4 in the first set, but instead, referee Nico Helwerth judged that the point should be replayed, with Kartal winning the match.
The Russian accused the civil servant at home, saying: “Because she is local, they can say anything. You have removed the game of me.”
In a press release, a spokesperson for Wimbledon said: “It is now clear that the ELC system live, which operated optimally, was mistakenly deactivated on the server side for a game by those who operated the system.
“Meanwhile, three calls were not delivered by ELC live on the assigned part of the court. Two of them were called by the chair referee, which was not informed that the system had been disabled.
“After the third, the chair referee arrested the match and consulted the exam manager. It was determined that the point should be replayed. The chair referee followed the established process. We apologized to the involved players.”
Pavlyuchenkova discussed the question with Helwerth after the match, and she said: “It was very confusing at the start because the ball seemed very long to me.
“It was a very crucial moment in the match. I expected a different decision. I just thought that the chair referee could take the initiative. This is why he was sitting on the chair. He also saw it, he told me after the match. I don’t know if it is something to do because she is local.
“I think we lose a little charm of having human beings. As during the cocovone, we did not have boys of ball. It becomes just a little bizarre and in a way oriented towards the robot.
“However, they are very good at giving fines, and code violations. This is not lacking because each time, they are right there. I prefer that they have looked at the lines and call errors better.”
The error follows complaints concerning the precision of New Tech
Kartal, who insisted that she did not know if the ball was in or out, defended the management of the situation by Helwerth.
“This situation is rare,” she said. “I don’t think it really happened. This is a difficult chance. What can you do? The referee does his best in this situation. I think he managed it. I think the most beautiful way was what he did, to replay the point.”
Pavlyuchenkova gathered well after the incident, saving a Kartal section point and winning a 7-6 (3) 6-4 victory and a quarter-final place.
When asked what she would have felt if she had lost, the 34 -year -old man joked: “I would just say that I hate Wimbledon and will never come back here.”
The incident is extremely embarrassing for Wimbledon, the organizers who defended innovation in the middle of the controversy concerning the deletion of line judges.
The main British duo Jack Draper and Emma Raducanu both complained about the accuracy of the system, which is now widely used during the tour this week.
After his defeat by Aryna Sabalenka on Friday, Raducanu said: “It’s a little disappointing, the tournament here, that calls can be so wrong.”
Wimbledon’s spokesperson added: “We continue to have fully confidence in the precision of the balloon tracking technology.
“The ELC live system is based on Hawk-Eye operators, the exam manager and technology to work in harmony.
