Evian Championship: English amateur Lottie Woad, Ireland’s Leona Maguire still in major golf contention | Golf News

Ireland Leona Maguire and the 21-year-old English amateur Lottie remain in the running halfway through the fourth female major of the year at the Evian championship in France.

With Somi Lee of South Korea fixing the pace out of 10 under a second round 65, the level of Maguire-Par 71 and the two under 69 of Woad leave them respectively four and five shots of the leader.

Maguire had started the day in a share of the head, but found himself equally seventh after the Birdies out of two, 15 and 17 were canceled by bogeys at eight, 16 and 18.

Woad, meanwhile, finished strongly with the Birdies in the 16th and 18th to finish two under his day, comfortably making the Cup for the fourth time of his seven major appearances as an amateur.

The 21 -year -old woman is in good shape, after winning her first professional victory at the Open Irish Women from KPMG last week, and said about her post in the top 12 of the major classification: “Certainly a little nervous, but it is also exciting at the same time.

“I’m only, like five years. Yeah, just trying to play well tomorrow and see what’s going on.”

Woads is joined on Five Under Global by Nelly Korda after the world No. 1 posted a second round 70, with the ranking of Jeeno Thitikul rankings also in the mixture at six under 68 consecutive years.

But Friday belonged to Lee, who did six birdies and an eagle to move into an advance suddenly on Grace Kim of Australia.

Lee sank two birdies and an eagle before enjoying a strong finish to the round on the nine birdies, with the 11, 13th, 15th and 18th holes.

“The starting blows are really important on this course, but mine was not great today,” Lee told LPGA. “But I managed to compensate with a solid putting.

“Right now, I’m focusing on my putter and my pilot, keeping my rhythm – and we’ll see where it takes me.”

Kim, second, carded nine under 68 years old, while the American Jennifer Kupcho, one of the four night co-leaders, ended the second day in third.

Lydia Ko and Ruoning Yin, classified third and fourth in the world respectively, missed the cup for two out of two, just like the winner of the Women’s Open, Maja Stark.
