T.J. Watt contract update: Steelers haven’t looked into possibly trading star pass rusher, per report
While they continue to work thanks to the contractual situation of TJ Watt, the Pittsburgh steelers have made no request to other teams on possibly exchanging their rusher with star passes, according to Mark Kaboly, correspondent of the Steelers for “The Pat McAfee Show”.
Kaboly added that, although the two parties still have a lot of work to do concerning a possible extension, there is no anticipation for Watt to hold when Pittsburgh opens the training camp on July 23.
Watt, 30, began the last year of his extension of contract of $ 112 million over four years which he signed just before the start of the regular season of 2022. Watt organized a restraint during the training camp that summer before signing an extension which at the time made him the best paid defender of the NFL.

It is largely supposed that Watt wanted to recover this status which is now held by the Rusher Browns Pass Myles Garrett after having signed an extension of $ 160 million over four years earlier this offseason.
Watt is currently the seventh rusher of NFL’s best paid pass in terms of average annual salary. His current average annual salary of just over $ 28 million is nearly $ 12 million less than Garrett, who was briefly paid for non-quarter in the history of the NFL before Ja’marr, the sea of Bengals exceeds $ 1 million.
The Steelers have the hood space to make Watt the best paid defender of the NFL; The question is whether it is something they want to do.
While he was appointed in his seventh Pro Bowl Pro Bow last year, the 2024 Watt season was less than his usual standard. Watt led the NFL in forced escapes, but its 11.5 bags were 7.5 less than its 2023 count. Watt had only two bags during the sequence of five Steelers defeats to close the 2024 season.
Given the end of last season, he is sure to say that the Steelers would like to see how Watt is doing this season before giving him a record contract. Steelers can try to move more Watt in an effort to help him be the best version of himself.
At this point, the most likely scenario is Watt signing an extension at one point by week 1. The two parties want to do something, and generally, when this is the case, an agreement is ultimately concluded. Given the amount of money that is thrown, it can take more time than usual to bring the pen to paper.
Although Watt trade is not outside the field of the possibility, it is very unlikely that it will ultimately be. This could obviously change, however, if the two parties reach and compete and Watt threatens to miss time during the regular season. There was no indication, however, that it is even an option at this stage for Watt, which is why the idea that the Steelers exchange their best player remain at best eccentric.
