England Women 6 – 1 Wales Women
Women in England will face Sweden in the quarter-finals of Euro 2025 after a 6-1 hammering women in Wales to finish second in group D.
The lionesses needed a victory to be assured of their place in the quarter-finals, no matter what happened in the other match between the Netherlands and France. The French were winners of 5-2 and suffered as a group winners.
And it was another smooth performance in St Gallen, according to a dominant 4-0 victory against the Dutch last week. This time, four of their goals came first half.
However, the game started with controversy. Georgia Stanway was launched by Carrie Jones at the dawn of the region, the arbitrator initially attributing a free kick.
And while Alex Greenwood posed it on this subject, a Var check looked for a possible penalty, finally granting England a kick with the fault of Jones considered as occurred inside the region – to the great anger of the Welsh bench.
The Stanway then aligned the penalty and finished expert in front of Olivia Clarke, who jumped in the right direction.
Shortly after, Ella Toone doubled the advance of England. It was a defensive mixture of the Welshmen who allowed Alessia Russo to bypass the goalkeeper, before reducing the ball for his teammate. Toone’s first effort was eliminated from the line, but it hammered the second at close range.
Toone then transformed the supplier of the third of the lionesses. She worked with Lauren James on the right, before getting up a cross to the rear station. Lauren Hemp was waiting to nod her head at the La Passe, the ball withdrawn from Clarke on the way.
It was the midfielder of the UTD man who then set up Russo for the fourth in England on the half-time, linking again with James in construction. She found the Arsenal striker in the center, who took a touch before hammering at home.
The second half was a smaller affair of all accounts, but has always seen three goals. It took until the 72nd minute so that England again opened the country of Wales while the part-time substitute Beth Mead added the fifth. She passed Rhiannon Roberts before planting her efforts in the lower corner.
But Wales had a last goal in their sleeves, and it was a superb effort. Jess Fishlock reminded everyone of his persistent leaf quality with a glorious pass to find Hannah Cain, the Leicester striker exceeding his efforts in front of Hannah Hampton.
England had a final goal in their sleeves in the last minute of normal time. It was a pass of Mead who found Aggie Beever-Jones, whose ball head added the sixth.
It was a categorical victory for the lionesses, who will now face Sweden in the quarter -final of Zurich on Friday. Wales leaves its first major tournament without registering a point, but has acquitted well in Switzerland.
