British and Irish Lions: Captain Maro Itoje demands whitewash over Australia after Henry Pollock comments | Rugby Union News
The British and Irish lions, Captain Maro Itoje, hopes that Australia wanted to whiten its side after Henry Pollock revealed that the team was trying to win the 3-0 series.
After six warm -up games, the Lions play their first test against Australia This Saturday at 11 a.m. (accumulation from 10 a.m.), live on Sky SportsIn Brisbane while they have been looking for their first serial victory since 2013, which has also appeared against the Wallabies.
Their last victory of the 3-0 series in Australia took place in 1904, while the 1974 team, which was considered the largest of all time, won three tests and attracted one in South Africa.
“I think it is definitely the ambition. It goes without saying, no one wants to lose a match,” Itoje of Pollock’s comments said.
“It would be a little weird if one of my teammates said” we want to win two and lose one “, it would be a bit strange.
“I hope it is also the ambition of Australia, to win all the matches. We want to win every match we play. But our entire goal is this Saturday, the other two games will take care of themselves.”
Lions on Monday, the Lions announced that the Scottish Trio Rory Sutherland, Ewan Ashman and Darcy Graham will join the team to help provide coverage after the first test.
Head coach Andy Farrell appointed a team of 38 players in May, but since his arrival in Australia, the great-back Jamie Osborne, hooker Jamie George and the propeller Tom Clarkson have also been added.
“Andy called them because he thinks it will help us reach our goal of winning a series of tests,” said Itoje.
“All the players who have been called are quality players. They have a high level of experience and have done things in their careers. We are all in the same way.
“No matter if there is a late call. We have seen late calls in the past have had huge impacts on the tour in a positive way. I have no doubt that all those who called play a role in the team achieving their objective.”
Itoje, who is the first black captain of the Lions, has played more and more in the warm -up matches leading to the first test.
The 30 -year -old says “it’s an incredible honor” to be part of a third lions tour and think that it is “different” from any other match, including the Six Nations World Cup or rugby.
“Naturally, in testing week, there is a poster of the mind. There is probably a higher level of concentration,” he said.
“The quality of our opposition this week will be much higher than what we have faced so far. We know there will be a big step in place.
“While we get closer to the game, we will become sharper. There is a healthy tension in the team because we know that is what we have worked.”
