Eli Willits selected No. 1 in 2025 MLB Draft: Why Nationals went with high school shortstop with first pick

The Washington Nationals have selected the Oklahoma Prep Eli Willit Cover Stop with the n ° 1 choice in the amateur draft of the Major Baseball League.
Willits, whose father Reggie has played in the majors and now Oklahoma coaches, has been classified as the best prospect in the class by CBS Sports. Here is what we wrote:
Willitles is considered to be the other preparation stop of preparation with large league lines near the top of the class, but I classified it aggressively in the spring and I do not see any reason not to do the same here. The son of Reggie is an infallible stop-curl with all the weapons necessary to be a plus or a better maturation defender. It is also a promising boost with solid skills of the management of the bat and the area (although it does not seem unlikely that it even happens to the average power). As a bonus, Willité will not celebrate his 18th birthday before December – studies have shown that such a skill at a young age tends to increase good for the player’s long -term prospects. I do not know that he will go n ° 1, but I would be shocked if he was available outside the first five.
Willitles is the third choice n ° 1 in the history of national franchises. Washington chose at the top of the draft in 2009 and 2010, selecting Ace Stephen Strasburg and the Bryce Harper from the Bryce Harper. He is also the youngest overall choice n ° 1 in the history of the MLB draft and the youngest draft player as a whole.
“Just the high contact rate, the discipline of the plaque, the patient ABS with the real increasingly precious switching profiles in this game,” said Danny Haas, to journalists after the choice (via the Washington Post).
The selection of nationals occurs a week after rejecting the general manager Mike Rizzo and the field director Davey Martinez. Washington appointed GM assistant Mike Debartolo as an interim main director.
