The government has taken support of the United Kingdom’s offer to welcome the world athletics championships and the world athletics championships in 2029.

“The organization of these championships would unlock not only opportunities for British athletes, but that would inspire the next generation to get involved and continue its ambitions.

“The event would give British companies a boost and support jobs as well as to bring together our communities. I am delighted to support the offer.”

The DCMS confirmed that it would provide “significant funding for the two offers” and will work closely with Bidder Athletic Ventures, UK Sport and Host Cities.

Lisa Nandy, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, said: “The main sporting events offer unforgettable moments and have the power to bring together our country as few else.

“This is why we are delighted to support an offer to bring back the world championships of athletics and para-athletics to the United Kingdom in 2029.

“As part of our change plan, we want to rely on our world-class reputation as hosts, not only offering economic benefits for the country but engaging communities, inspiring the next generation and presenting the best of Great Britain in the world.”
