The Open: Rory McIlroy feels form returning ahead of Ryder Cup after impressive major week at Royal Portrush | Golf News
Rory McILroy may not have been victorious in Royal Portrush, but the Masters champion teased his best scintillating with the Ryder Cup on the golf horizon after the last male major of the year.
The Northern Irishman finished the 153rd Open equally at the seventh at 10 under after a week during which he had delighted his crowd of origin with a return to a return to form, including a third round 66.
McILroy has been fighting for the momentum since the end of the big career chelem in Augusta earlier this year, but ranked second in Scotland in Scotland last week before putting himself in the running in Portrush, where an inspired Scottie Scheffler was out.
The 36 -year -old man was encouraged by his renewed sharpness between the strings.
“Yeah, I do (I feel good), but I also had the three victories when Scottie was not entirely on his game,” said McILroy.
“But I do it, I feel good. I feel like I am back in Europe for a little was a great reset. I feel like I come back where I want to be, and we still have a lot of golf this year, the Ryder Cup is obviously the big one in September.
“And just make sure I am – I don’t want to play it too much because I want to be fresh. So I can’t wait for a few weeks off here.
“I’m going to think about what has already been a happy new year and start preparing for this Ryder Cup race.”
McILroy was greeted by a noisy atmosphere while he was riding the 18th green on Sunday, having been followed by the largest gallery of the week in Portrush.
He had referred to the task of rediscovering his “Why?” In recent weeks, in the light of his long -awaited victory of the masters. It may have been a reminder of that.
“I did the best that I could keep my emotions under control, especially when I climb the last there and this reception,” said McILroy.
“Yeah, look, it was a great week. I got everything I wanted this week apart from a Bordeaux jug, and it’s just because a person was just a little better than the rest of us.
“It was an incredible week. I feel so grateful and so lucky that I can do that, I can do that in front of this crowd.
“I hope I will stay one or two open here, if the D&S decides to continue to come back, probably one while I am always competitive and another when I am more gray than I am already.
“It was incredible to come back here and play and at least feel as if I was a chance today to go there. Just a brilliant week.”
McILroy will appear as part of Team Europe when they defend their Ryder Cup crown against the United States in New York from September 26 to 28.
McILroy: Incredible Scheffler the best of the game
Scheffler would prove once again untouchable while the world n ° 1 entered a victory four shots out of 17 sous to win his fourth major title.
He is now just US Open Glory far from following in McILroy traces by finishing the big career chelem, having also won the PGA championship earlier this year.
“None of us could hang out with Scottie this week,” said Mcilroy. “He is an incredible player. He is dominant this week. Honestly, he has been dominant for a few years.
“It is the bar that we all try to reach. In a historical context, you could say that there may be only two or three players in the history of the game that have been in the race, the one that Scottie has been here for 24 to 36 months.
“Yeah, he’s a very worthy winner. In addition, he is a great person, and I think he is also a wonderful ambassador for our game. I am really happy for him and Meredith and his family.”
Scheffler made comparisons with Tiger Woods, such was its recent consistency and the potential to dominate at the top of the golf course. He has now recorded 16 top 10 in Majors since the beginning of 2020.
“Admiration. I think everything you can do is admire what it does and how it does it,” added McILroy. “I think what he does is one thing, but the way he does it is another.
“He is just going to his business, does nothing too flamboyant, but he is the best to perform in the game right now.
“Yeah, it has been absolutely incredible in the past two to three years. As I said, all you can do is tip your cap and look in admiration.”
