British and Irish Lions: ‘Emotional’ Jamie George among those pushing to be in Test thinking after 47-hour trek around the world | Rugby Union News
It took Jamie George for 47 hours to travel from San Juan to Argentina to Australia to connect with the British and Irish lions last week. Now, the whore is determined to seize a last opportunity to which it “did not expect”.
Tourist Lions in 2017 in New Zealand and 2021 in South Africa, George began the three tests against the All Blacks in the old series.
The 34-year-old man was transmitted for Andy Farrell’s selection this time, however, and although he was brought as a training cover to Dublin, he was not selected in the 23-playing team to face Argentina at the Aviva stadium before leaving the group.
A second late call will cause an appearance in Red this time, while George begins for the Lions against a First Nations and Pasifika XV Tuesday in Melbourne, live Sky Sports.
“It was really chaos, because I didn’t understand how it was all going to work,” said George.
“So I woke up on Saturday morning by preparing our second test against Argentina with a few messages saying that Luke Cowan-Dickie had taken a whim.
“Steve Barthwick spoke to me and was essentially the one who told me that I was going to Australia. Then I spoke to Andy Farrell and that there was a conversation to know if I could play in the game and then come, because there were no flights outside San Juan that evening, so I had to stay for the game anyway.
“Door to porce, it was about 47 hours of travel, from San Juan to Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires in Rio, Rio in Dubai, Dubai in Brisbane.
“I gave the world a good trick but look, if it was me, I would have swam here.
“By obtaining this call, I thought about the disappointment of not being selected in the initial team, I had my heart broken to this. Now I had the opportunity to put the jersey. Some of the best memories I have ever had on a rugby field were in 2017 with the Lions.
“To be able to represent the Lions again, these are dreams.
“For me, it’s emotional to be able to be back there. I never thought that this opportunity would come.”
“Tuesday is one of the biggest games in my career”
From Argentina to Australia, George now has his eyes on impressing enough to assert himself.
Dan Sheehan stood out for Lions so far in Hooker, but Ronan Kelleher has struggled to align, while Luke Cowan-Dickie was injured due to a concussion.
Consequently, there may well be a chance for George, whose thoughts turn to his parents – his father having canceled his initial flight in Australia but now on the way, and his mother unfortunately died in February 2024.
“I am breathtaking, I find it very surreal and I am surprised. It will be one of the biggest games in my career,” he said.
“I never thought I had this opportunity again and I will not let it slide. I am as motivated as I have never been.
“I can’t think too far. Dan Sheehan for me is the best whore on the planet per minute, otherwise one of the best rugby players on the planet. He is incredible. I could not be more impressed by him.
“All I can do is focus on the benefit of every opportunity I get. It may be the last time for me, it may not be, but I will try to put my best foot forward. I will not complain if it’s the last time.
“When I do it, I want to make sure to make people proud, make the jersey proud. I will do everything I can to win in a lions jersey.
“International selection is one thing, being selected is one thing, but gaining lion is different. That’s what it is.
“Some of my best memories of my mother and my father were during the 2017 Lions tour. It is sad that my mother cannot be there.
“Being able to do things like that for people like my old man, giving him the opportunity to travel to Australia and watch his son play for lions, it’s a bit special about what I do.
“It’s the biggest motivation to explain why I do what I do.”
Gatland: Tuesday really important opportunity for players – Farrell must give them believe
Sky Sports analyst and Lions chief coach Warren Gatland three times:
“Tuesday is an opportunity for players. It really becomes, really important.
“There will be many lions players who will see the result of this evening and performance and thought:` `I must really perform Tuesday to put myself in a chance of selection the following week [third Test] or in test correspondence 23 [second Test].
“One of the things that Andy Farrell has to do, and we have done in the past, is that players believe that with a very good performance on Tuesday, you still have a chance to be selected for the test test on Saturday.
“In 2013, when we were here, after the first test, we had players who were selected for the second test with a very good performance in Melbourne.
“It will be difficult to make some changes. I cannot see a lot to do between the first and second tests, but you have to make players believe:” Go ahead and perform well on Tuesday and you never know what could happen. “”
