Aces fall again despite A’ja Wilson’s return from concussion: Three takeaways from Las Vegas’ loss to Storm
A’ja Wilson recorded a double-double in his return to the programming of the AS of Las Vegas on Friday, but his team has always undergone a defeat of 90-83 against the Seattle storm. THE The aces continue to fight And are now on a sequence of three consecutive defeats while falling at 5-7 in the season.
Although the AS has entered half-time with an advantage of 44-38 after overcoming an early 10-point deficit, the storm, now 8-5, won the match with Nneka Ogwumike and Skylar Diggins combining for 49 points.
Jackie Young led the AS efforts with 22 points while Wilson collected 20 points and 14 rebounds. Wilson said she “always returns to the swing of things” after missing three games in the concussion protocol, but also admitted that she was not satisfied with her performance.
“I feel good. I just have to start honesty start putting the ball in the hoop and stop giving it to the other team,” Wilson said after the match. “It is unacceptable on my side, so I have to be better on Sunday and move forward for my team because that’s not how I wanted to come back.”
The AS will be back on the field on Sunday when they welcome Indiana fever. Before that, here are three dishes to take the loss of aces against Seattle.
Wilson made unusual mistakes
Wilson obtained the 104th double-double in his career while adding two assists, two interceptions and three blocks. These are good statistics for a player who missed the last three games, but there were certainly domains that could have been better.
Wilson had a summit of the season on Friday. She also went 8 out of 13 of the free throw line, which is unusual because she had drawn 91.4% from there.
The free misfortunes were particularly hurtful at the end of the match because with less than 40 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Wilson drew a fault while the AS were down 88-83. It was a good opportunity for a last punch of Las Vegas, but she missed the two attempts and the Aces did not score again.
“I thought she was a little rusty today,” said Aces coach Becky Hammon. “Seven reversals are extremely unusual for her. She gets a little time of grace on it, which stands out and did not play for a while.”
Third quarters still a struggle for AS
One of the greatest difficulties for Las Vegas this season is that he cannot remain consistent for 40 minutes. Although the team found a momentum at the end of the first half, the AS allowed Seattle to return to the third quarter with six reversals in 10 minutes.
“It’s more than a Achilles heel. This is one thing,” said Hammon when he was questioned about the model of his team in difficulty in the third quarters. “Maybe I’m going to start another five in the third quarter, we will see. Everything is on the table at this stage because it is disgusting.”
The coach was particularly embarrassed by the defense of his team.
“Our defense was excruciating, once again in the third quarter, and it was the first five, not this second unit,” said Hammon. “I actually thought that our second unit had a good race there since the end of the first in the second. It cannot be worse than the first five in the third quarter. I will discuss it with some of my coaches, but yes, I could change who we start in the third quarter.”
The recruit equaled its career with 13 points Friday while making 5 out of 9 on the field and 3 out of 4 of Beyond Arc. She was one of the players who helped trigger races for AS with her energy. Hammon saw his efforts in the first three quarters and started it in the fourth.
His defense is always a work in progress, but Nye seems to build chemistry with the veterans of his team and earn more confidence in coach staff.
“She has a few minutes because she plays hard,” said Hammon. “His effort is there every time. I can’t say the same thing.”
