Andree Jeglertz: Man City Women appoint Denmark national team manager as new head coach | Football News
Andree Jeglertz has agreed with a four-year contract to become the new Manchester City women’s head coach, the Denmark national team director should take over after the European championship this summer.
The 53 -year -old Swedish replaces Gareth Taylor, who was dismissed by the female Super League club in March after five years at the helm. Nick Cushing took the temporary charge and guided City to a fourth league last season.
Jeglertz, who has been the boss of Denmark since 2023 – they have faced Germany, Poland and Sweden in group C in Switzerland – has an impressive history of women’s football after being appointed Damallsvenskan Manager of the year in Umea, where he won the UEFA women’s cup – later the Champions League – in 2004.
He also guided Umea to two other UEFA women’s cup finals in 2007 and 2008, while winning four successive league titles and the Swedish cup, before a spell in male football in charge of Djurgardens, in 2009.
Jeglertz’s first foray into international direction occurred in 2010 with the Finland women’s team, which he helped qualify for the euros for the third time in their history in 2013 after missing a first appearance in the World Cup two years ago.
As a player, he was a defender with Malmo, Ifk Trelleborg, Umea, Hassleholm and Gimonas, while being capped three times by Sweden U21.
The appointment of City Hope Jeglertz will improve their chances of silverware, in particular the WSL title that they only won once in 2016.
“Manchester City is one of the biggest clubs in the world,” said Jeglertz. “There is so much talent in this group. One of my key things is to continue the work that has been done and to get it to the next level.
“We would like to win, develop players and want players every day to become better. I will do everything I can to get this up to the next level and make sure we can play attractive and winning football.”
Manchester City’s director of football women, Therese Sjogran, said about the new head coach: “Andree brings a richness of experience at the top of the match as well as a real hunger to advance Manchester City.
“I saw his first -hand work in Umea, Finland and Linkopings, so I can understand why he has already been very successful at the level of the club. It is clear that he is determined to rely on this here in City in the years to come.
“Andree really impressed us with his attitude and ambition, and the way he sees the game aligns perfectly with our own vision.
“We wish him good luck with euros this summer with Denmark and are all very happy to see what impact he can have in our brilliant future.”
