Andy Farrell: British and Irish Lions head coach offers scathing assessment after ‘unacceptable’ defeat to Argentina | Rugby Union News
Head coach of the British and Irish lions, Andy Farrell, marked the performance of his team in the defeat against Argentina “not acceptable” in a scathing assessment to Sky Sports.
The Lions began their tour in 2025 with a 28-24 defeat against the Pumas in Dublin on Friday, while the Felipe Contepomi team made the story by beating tourists for the first time.
The Lions came from 11 points to lead in the second half, but Argentina refused to lie down and went out in a competition in which they marked three sensational tests.
A certain number of Knock-ons, errors and poorly informed discharges have exasperated Farrell, who published a scathing assessment of the first outing of his team before their tour in Australia.
“It was not exactly a show from us, it was an Argentina show. First and foremost, congratulations to them, they completely deserve their victory,” said Farrell.
“They capitalized on all the mistakes we have made. But as far as we are concerned, there is a lot to do. You cannot win any test match with this error rate.
“We have lost enough ball there for a full tour, not to mention a match against a good team like Argentina. We have launched passes that have never been on.
“It was not only that, it was the air battle and the leftovers on the ground. They were hungry than us, which is simply not acceptable. The work of alignment and breakdown was sometimes a little.
“I am disappointed. We must be honest with ourselves, take learning and improve, so at least it represents something.”
When he was asked if he thought that one of the new combinations of Lions worked well in the competition, Farrell said that he would not be attracted to names and had cut a frustrated silhouette with defeat.
“There was good and evil throughout, I would not distinguish individuals or combinations,” he said.
“We were a little temporary and obviously, I take responsibility.
“You don’t win test matches when things like it happen.
“Where we are certainly focusing on the spirits. We will be honest with ourselves, we get on the plane for Australia [on Saturday]. “”
