Austrian GP: George Russell fastest from Max Verstappen as Alex Dunne impresses in first practice | F1 News
George Russell was the fastest of Max Verstappen during the first practice of the Austrian Grand Prix when Alex Dunne of Ireland impressed during his beginnings in McLaren.
Russell Canada winner, which revealed Sky Sports F1 That Mercedes speaks to Verstappen of the future of the Dutchman, piqued his rival of 0.065 on Red Bull’s Home Track.
The head of the Oscar Piastri championship finished third and Dunne, who replaced Lando Norris for the first session in Austria, took fourth place and was only a quarter of second rhythm Russell.
The F1 teams must respect a rule which forces them to direct a recruit in at least four training sessions during the season, then McLaren took the opportunity to give Dunne a chance to shine and he certainly attracted the attention of the paddock.
Dunne, 19, leads the Formula 2 championship and became the first Irish pilot to participate in a F1 racing weekend from Ralph Firman in 2003.
“You just want him to have a good session and that everything is fine. All the merit,” said Sky Sports F1‘S Bernie Collins.
“He looks so strong in F2 and did a fantastic job. I couldn’t be more proud of him.”
Lewis Hamilton has undergone a gearbox number halfway through the session and was ninth while Ferrari brought a new floor to Austria to try to fill his horse deficit.
Ferrari also directed a recruit with Dino Bedingovic leading to the place of Charles Leclerc, who will return with Norris for the second test later Friday at 4 p.m.
