The former British and Irish Lions, Captain Sam Warburton, praises the selection of the team near Andy Farrell to face the Brumbies and says that it would offer a lot of time to the players to recover before the first test against Australia

Head coach Andy Farrell confirmed on Monday that his son was in the running to play in the last match before the first test against Australia on July 19, after finishing all his return to play concussion protocols.

His last match was for race 92 against Lyon when he suffered an injury to the head, another setback of a season which was interrupted by the groin surgery. He only played 17 games in the 2024-25 campaign.

“I wouldn’t say he still has the jet lag. I think he was standing overnight, but we haven’t all crossed that? But the rest is fine,” said Andy Farrell.

Farrell named the side of the British and Irish lions to face the Brumbies on Wednesday, but could it be the starting alignment to face the Wallabies during the first test in Brisbane?

Farrell’s call is controversial since his latest test for England was almost two years ago and that his only season at Racing 92 was disappointing to the point that he agreed from an immediate return to the Saracens.

However, management considers its experience and leadership as precious assets, in particular because he is the only player of the team who was present for the last triumphant tour of the Lions, also in Australia in 2013.

Sexton: delighted to have Farrell in the team

Johnny Sexton, the former Irish half-volume who is the coach of the Lions, insists that Farrell adapted in the transparent way with tourists.

“The experience he has, the winning mentality he has, not to mention the quality of a player – it’s great to have him in the team,” said Sexton Sky Sports News After Tuesday’s training session.

“You can see immediately how excited the young no 10 was. It seems that he also has an excellent relationship with Finn Russell of the previous tour.

“So it was great to have it here. He already adds to the group. He is very well trained today in his first appropriate session with us, and we are impatient to integrate it into the group in the coming weeks.”

The captain of the British and Irish lions Maro Itoje discusses history between them and the brambies, and why it is different from the last time they lost

Addressing journalists in Canberra, Sexton added: “As you can imagine with someone with this experience, he is suitable. He hit the ground, so it’s great to see.

“He must have had the game book on the plane on the way because he entered and he did not miss a beat.”

“He was aware of training and that is exactly why you choose someone with experience that has a visit to the Lions, because it could take some other 10 days to integrate.”
