Emily Deschanel was scolded on ‘Bones’ for being ‘late and unprepared’
Dr. Temprance Brennan presenting himself late and not prepared? Never!
But there was a moment Emily Deschanel, who played the meticulous forensic anthropologist through 12 seasons of Bonewas scolded to be just that – and the memory always makes the star emotional.
The actress was frank on the reprimand, and her difficulties against anxiety and panic crises at the start of the series race, in an honest conversation with David Duchovny on her podcast, Better.
Deschanel, who was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia when she was a child, found herself in difficulty, especially in the first exhausting season of the series, learning all the complex anatomical jargon that his character frequently spat.
“We worked for crazy hours, longer than a simple normal series. You work from 2 to 4 p.m., then I had to memorize the lines,” said Deschanel. “So I would stand up late at night to memorize lines. I would like to go home and that I was just crying in a bathtub every night because I was so outdated.”
She continued: “I came to get and try to remember the lines which … I did not sleep and that I tried to remember the lines that I had memorized the previous night, then I had them in my head and I did not remember.”
Everything came to the head when an accident during his journey brought him 30 minutes late to work one day.
“Deer [Hanson, series creator] Struck at the door of my trailer, which was not a usual thing, he did not hit my door often, “she recalls.” He took me aside and said: “The studio has concerns about your work.” They said I was late and without preparation. For me – I become emotional just by thinking about it now because it was probably shame. »»
She continued: “I mean, I was a wreckage. I took it so hard. I was such a fragile person at the time. I was hardened by doing this show for so long. I was not sleeping, I was so stressed. I was already, I am an emotional person, so I was right next to me.”

For the record, Deschanel said that after this conversation, she was never late again. And luckily, the next day, they learned that the series had been recovered for more episodes. And of course, it would get much more than that – in all, Bone ran for 246 episodes out of 12 seasons.

Things have improved for Deschanel from there with the help of Hanson, who made sure to make him a larger trailer for more privacy, and more time of downtime to work on the lines.
“Hart helped me find ways to better, do my job in terms of learning my lines and remembering them,” she said, concluding, “and a large part was to have downtime or have a scene in which I am not, etc. He is just a good. We were so lucky.”
