England vs India: Jamie Smith hits record-breaking century, puts on over 300 with Harry Brook, but tourists still in charge | Cricket News
Jamie Smith reached the highest scoring by a test goalkeeper in England and threatened to smoke the fastest tonne of the team while he and Harry Brook led a moving response against India – although tourists remain firmly controlled in Edgbaston after a third pulsed day.
Smith (184No off 207) reached its one hundred at 80 balls – four less than the record effort of Gilbert Jessop in 76 against Australia in the oval in 1902 – and continued its 173 amasted by the former Gloveman of England Alec Stewart against New Zealand in 1997.
Smith and Brook (158 off 234) joined forces in the second in the morning with England in shock at 84-5 – how much they dragged by 503 points – after Joe Root (22) and Ben Stokes (0) fell to successive deliveries by Mohammed Siraj (6-70).
But the ticket office then lasted the Ballon du Chapeau halfway up for four like his first act of a century Rodal – the third faster in England in this format – and Rolilicking sixth colonist of 368 balls with a comrade Centurion Brook, before the hosts lost 5-20 and were not out of 468 balls with a Centurion colleague Brook, before the hosts allow 5-20 and had not been released for 407 in Trail by 180 on the first Intensin.
India – which lost the first test in Headingley despite the control for long periods – extended their advantage to 244 by stumps, for the loss of Yashasvi Jaiswal for a 28 balls with four balls of 22 balls, with KL Rahul (28no) – which equaled Jaiswal visitors after 13 virsnes.
There was a drama around Joswal’s LBW dismissal to Josh Tongue with Stokes feeling that the striker took too long to call the DRS – although the exam has failed anyway with the ball to nail the sting.
Smith GrĂ©sille in Edgbaston after Siraj’s twin shot
Jessop England Hunged’s record has long seemed likely to be overshadowed in the Bazball era, Jonny Bastow fell for a ton of 77 balls against New Zealand in his first summer in 2022.
Smith was the last to challenge that now 123 years of reference, with five limits in a 23 -point Prasidh Krishna, then six and four consecutive deliveries of Ravira Jadeja helping him at 84 years of 61 balls.
The 24 -year -old finally slowed down while the hope of winning on Jessop has dissipated – at least at the moment – with his ton of 80 balls, reached before lunch, matching Brook’s in Pakistan in December 2022.
It is rare for Brook – who, in these sleeves, has become the fastest player in history at 2,500 points, which did it from 2,382 deliveries, and now has nine tonnes in 27 games – to play the second violin, but it was the case here, with its century marked with 137 balls.
Brook had led the counterattack, although Skittish, from 25-3 Thursday – after the outings of Ben Duckett (0), Ollie Pope (0) and Zak Crawley (19) – and launched other kicks the next morning in the first of Siraj after turning the root in the side of the legs and inflicting a golden duck on a short term.
Brook also impresses for England but India still in charge
Brook, seeming more safe than the day before, has reserved the follow-up of Siraj with ovens, sprinkling a delivery launched by the extra-covered blanket before cutting a balloon into a length of its hip.
Smith then largely took over, clinging to everything that is full or short while he was pulling, led and spawning a path to a second century of test – proving particularly hard on Prasidh – since his replacement of the Surrey team, Ben Foakes, as a drummer of gates in England last summer.
Many fans have been disappointed when Foakes, widely accepted as the best gloveman in the world, has been ax, but that few are complaining now, with Smith’s ability to move through the gears and reach the levels of torque that Faakes could not, a vital part of the Arsenal of England.
Smith and Brook – who reduced Jadeja to the slides out of 63 before the delivery has chipped the skipper of India Shubman Gill on the head – marked at a slower pace after lunch while the ball became mild and the tourists fought outside the stump with propagation fields.
Smith then managed to whisk Akash Deep (4-88) for six and four in after the tea in the middle of the quick end of the sleeves, which included local boy Chris Woakes (5) Snicking behind on the disc.
Brook’s dismissal – played with a peach of a pinch of Akash – was the catalyst for the collapse, Siraj by removing Brydon Carse, Tongue and Shoaib Bashir without score while England recorded six ducks in total on a remarkable dashboard.
