France Women 1 – 1 Germany Women
Despite a player sent in the 13th minute, Germany won a victory for the ages, finally defeating France 6-5 in penalties after a 1-1 draw to set up a confrontation in the Euro 2025 semi-final with Spain.
Ann-Katrin Berger was the hero with an incredible diving backup in the game before scoring a penalty and saving two during the shooting.
France had won its three group games, including victories against England and Wales, while Germany had undergone a humiliating defeat of 4-1 against Sweden in their last group match.
And that looked like more unluckiness to come, especially with their crisis on the right back, when the third choice Sarai Linder was injured in the first minutes. The comrades of Ostaux Giulia Gwinn (injury) and Carlotta Wamser (suspension) will not be available for the semi-final.
Before the substitution of Linder, Germany gave a moving penalty while Kathrin Hendrich pulled the hair of the captain of France Griedge Mbock Bathy. He was captured by Var, the defender sent and the Blue granted a penalty.
Grace Geyoro intensified and was roughly Beat Berger, who made his fingertips on the ball, but not enough to prevent powerful effort.
But ten minutes later, Germany equalized. Klara Buhl sent in a fine corner and a good nusken sjoeke race at the nearby post saw him take a look at the house.
Just before the break, France had the ball in the net, but the flag was in place. Geyoro traveled the ball so that Delphine Cascarino ends, but an offside was confirmed in the accumulation – although only by a toe.
And before the time, the offside rule returned to bite France. The initial head of Marie-Initionette Katoto was well saved by Berger, but Geyoro was on site to mark the rebound. However, Maelle Lakrar was offside in the accumulation and was deemed interfering with the capacity of the goalkeeper to save the ball, and the goal was therefore excluded.
To date, the game was fairly between the two parties, but Germany had the chance to take the lead when they received their own penalty.
It was a clumsy challenge by Selma Bacha on the Jule brand, while Nusken aligned the kick. But Pauline Peyraud-Magnin saved the effort of the Chelsea midfielder, to the delight of her teammates.
France looked largely perplexed for a plan B for a large part of the rest of the game, but had a moment in addition to time that could have saved it. The German captain Janina Minge inadvertently hosted his head towards his own goal, forcing a stop jumping in a shepherd hand in one of the tournament stops.
The goalkeeper was also the hero of Germany during the shooting. The Germans only missed one, because Sara Dabritz – caused late as a substitute for penalties – hit the crossbar, shepherd saving twice from Amel Majri and Alice Sombath to send her team in the most improbable circumstances.
Germany, which won the euros a record eight times, will now face the world champions in Spain in the semi-finals on Wednesday.
