The Oscar -winning actress, who at the age of 21, became the first deaf artist to win an Oscars, tells her story in the new documentary Marlee Matlin: more alone. And part of this story is the key role Winkler has played in his life of inspiration and friend.
The two met for the first time when Winkler visited the country as a member of the Happy days Cast and Matlin was just a teenager with great dreams. They stayed in touch, and Winkler was a soft place of Matlin to land for a difficult period of his life.
Matlin had a tumultuous romantic relationship of two years in the 1980s with her Children of a lesser God Costar William injured, recalling in his 2009 memories that he was often violent towards her. However, Hurt encouraged him to readjust himself for his dependence on alcohol and drugs, and it was there that she achieved the unhealthy nature of their situation.
“There were a lot of things that I learned as a detoxification treatment,” said Matlin in the documentary, “who stressed that things were not good. Physical violence and verbal violence, mental and emotional violence was not correct. I learned that there.”
Matlin says that experience did and injured her to realize that their relationship was never going to be the same after rehabilitation. “I decided that I had it,” she said. “I got out of this house and I never returned.”
Instead, she went to Winkler looking for help after inviting her to come to his home in California and to speak.
Winkler clearly remembers this moment. “Strong the door. Marlee,” he recalls in the doc. “‘I have no place to stay. I just broke with my boyfriend. Can I stay with you just for the weekend?'”
Naturally, the actor said it was not a problem. Then, “two years later, she finally moved”, he went, before breaking down into a broad smile.
“This family took me as if I were one of their own,” adds Matlin. “I will never forget that.”
Winkler also notes: “She was not completely whole at that time, then I said to her:” If you know what you want without ambivalence, if you are clear on what you want, everything else will be put in place. “”

Her words sounded true, and Matlin found her place in Los Angeles, when she reserved the television show Reasonable doubts And met her husband, police officer Kevin Grandski. The two were married on August 29, 1993 in the backyard of Winkler’s home. Home video sequences of the ceremony are also included in the film.
“There was nothing else to do,” said Winkler in the doc. “There was no other place for her to get married, except in our courtyard, in her house far from her home.”

Winkler and Matlin stay close to this day. While making the press for the film during his first at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, Matlin told people she considered Winkler his “fairy godfather”.
