How the ‘F1’ team pulled off that epic car race crash

Warning: this article contains spoilers on F1: The film.

Like the Tchekhov pistol, any film on the race or the formula one must also be delivered with a massive set of an accident.

This wait is certainly carried out several times F1: the filmNow in the rooms, but the most memorable of the various collisions comes halfway from the second act when the recruit pilot Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris) fails to listen to the advice of Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) and goes for an opening to take the lead in a race when it is not warned of not doing it.

Consequently, he skids on the track and the car turns into the air, turning several times before landing in the grass in an ardent fire. While many films could today perform with visual effects, director Joseph Kosinski was determined to get there.

“We have done this accident practically,” he said Entertainment every week. “It was a massive installation. Damson ended the air in the air in a rotation car, which was quite intense. It was actually based on an incident that occurred in the same corner of the three -year formula about 10 years ago. We adapted it for our film and put it in the rain and the formula.”

Making it even more intense was the fact that, as can be the case with something of this scale, everything did not go exactly as planned. “It ended up not being what I expected, but still a little spectacular in different ways,” said Kosinski. “We had done all these calculations on exactly where the car was going to land. We knew precisely, and the first time we launched the car, it fell to about 10 feet.”

Kosinski solution: increase speed. “We ended up sending it much further than we had calculated,” continues Kosinski. “But because of this, there is an uncontrolled savagery in the accident that really translates to the screen.”

Indeed, when Sonny – not far behind – witnesses what is going on, recalling the accident that brought him out 30 years earlier, he jumps from his own car and rushes to get Joshua out of the flamboyant wreck. Pearce’s injuries bring him out of the game for several weeks while he recovers from Burns in his hand. Kosinski notes that Pitt was able to observe the accident, adopting the unexpected distance, then working on this additional scale to his reaction during the filming of his component of the sequence.

F1 Follows the formerly promising driver Sonny Hayes while taking a last blow to the redemption at the invitation of Vieil Friend and Colleague runner, Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), who is about to be ousted by the board of directors of his racing team. However, things do not go exactly as planned when Sonny Butts heads with the newcomer Joshua Pearce and brings his operating tactics on the track.
