Ireland beat Portugal 106-7 in record-breaking 16-try rout | ‘I feel sorry for Portugal,’ says Paul O’Connell | Rugby Union News
Ireland ran in a record of 16 tests in a unilateral rout 106-7 from Portugal to Lisbon to record its greatest test victory during the first meeting between the two nations.
The pair of CONSUCHT Hugh Gavin and Shayne Bolton spent twice during their beginnings and there were also two for the club teammate and Flanker Cian Prendergast and Leinster Wing Tommy O’Brien.
With flying half-time, Jack Crowley disembarking 12 of his 15 conversion attempts-Ireland also received a penalty test-the margin of victory won its greatest previous victory when they marked 13 trials in an 83-3 defeat of the United States in 2000.
Irish’s acting coach, Paul O’Connell, was without 17 players, who are all on tour with the British and Irish lions, but his new look ruthlessly exposed the chasm between them and their hosts.
O’Connell made six changes after last week’s 34-5 victory against Georgia at Tbilisi and the Irish spent four trials converted in the first 14 minutes.
The Stuart McCloskey center approached in the corner after the rear of the rear Jimmy O’Brien was straight for the start and his colleague Gavin took over for his first first trial in the ninth minute.
Tommy O’Brien finished another scys break in the corner and the opposite wing Bolton sprout after breaking Clear for a test during his beginnings, with Crowley adding his fourth conversion.
The rear of Portugal, Nuno Guedes, had a prohibited test for a front pass before the hosts were carried another blow when Captain Tomas Appleton was swept away on a stretcher due to an ankle injury.
Crowley sent Tommy O’Brien to his second try and extend Tom Clarkson Bulldozer through a tackle tackled for the sixth score of Ireland in the 33rd minute.
Bolton went beyond the defense of Portugal to approach the kick of Craig Casey and Miss Pass of the latter after the break of Hooker Gus McCarthy sent Gavin for his second score.
Crowley won his seventh conversion to put Ireland 54-0 at the interval.
Half of Scrum Casey followed Bolton’s break to mark 90 seconds after restarting and prendergast burst into an unconverted score to extend Ireland’s advance at 66-0 in the 51st minute.
Portugal has received a respite when the unloading of Center Vincent Pinto set up the Flanker Nicolas Martins for a converted score, but Ireland struck directly.
Calvin Nash and Cian Frewley replacements attracted shortly after leaving the bench and Prendergast then marked his second try.
When the beginner Flanker Alex Kendellen passed for another score converted in the 73rd minute, Ireland advanced 92-7.
The half-replacement half of Ben Murphy tries to run Ireland closer to the triple figures and the misery of Portugal was finished when they conceded a penalty test during the final game of the game to have dropped a Maul.
What they said
Ireland’s acting coach, Paul O’Connell, said Sports Virgin: “I’m sorry for Portugal, but we were very clinical and tried our luck.
“It is a unique summer tour since the lions tour is at the same time, but I am very satisfied with how our team applied.
“It’s great to get stuck and mark tests and train in an international environment.”
Irish captain Craig Casey said Sports Virgin: “Our adult to remember today is our mentality. We were very professional and played our game to obtain the result.
“It’s a shame that the stadium is not full, but seeing the amount of Irish fans here was special to get the result for them.”
