Hager, 43, is also the daughter of former president George W. Bush, who published his own declaration on the floods: “On this day of prayer, Laura and I are holding our compatriots who suffer,” Bush started. “We have a heart broken by the loss of life and the agony that many feel. Those who have lost their precious children face a grief that no parent should never know.”

The retired politician then thanked the first speakers and volunteers to help people affected.

“We know that our words cannot help,” said Bush, “but we believe that so many Americans will do so.”
