Leicester Tigers boss Michael Cheika: Premiership final referee gave us nothing – ‘Dan Cole sin-bin embarrassing for rugby’ | Rugby Union News
The outgoing head coach of Leicester Tigers, Michael Cheika, said that the final referee of the Premièreship, Karl Dickson, “gave us nothing” and labeled the late Dan Colening “embarrassing for the game”.
Leicester underwent a 23-21 defeat against Bath in Twickenham on Saturday, when the latter won a first first title for 29 years – dating from 1996.
The tigers fell from 20-7 in the second half, but reduced the gap to a 20-14 score with 12 minutes to play via a Salomone Kata test. Two minutes later, Cole – playing in the last professional match in his career – was hard enriched by sin when he left the line to load a finn Russell kick, having contacted the ball once.
Referee Dickson decreed an offense of penalty, marking where the ball landed in half of Leicester and sending Cole to the bac for the rest. Russell kicked the resulting penalty, the three points proving to be decisive.
This sinful decision and the lack of additional reward for the domination of melee throughout the competition has annoyed the post-match of Cheika.
“The melee, we dominated completely. I have never seen it before in my life, dominating like that and receiving nothing, zero. In fact, I am penalized against!” Said Cheika.
“Obviously, it was a strategic point for us to try to dominate it and in Maul too. It was completely canceled, it cost us the position on the field. I think that with three minutes to travel, it was nine penalties in two. It is impossible to manage a position scenario on the field with this result.
“I don’t think, and I will always have a slightly biased lens, we were much more than them. It was frustrating to say the least.
“”[The yellow card for Cole was] Ridiculous. And the guy should be embarrassed to send him for that. It was not even dangerous. It was not even a penalty.
“For me personally, if the game sends players to the sin-good for that, or even penalizes … What am I saying guy?” If I say something, I will put myself in conflict and I will withdraw from the other team.
“I just have to fight inside and try to keep as much as I can inside. I have my feelings about the referee’s performance but I will take that with [head of refereeing] Paul Hull as a last one… joke, let’s say. “”
Talk to TNT SPORTS After the match, before attending her press conference, Cheika also said: “I thought we didn’t get anything back from the referee and we continued to come back and introduce ourselves. We have marked three trials, that tells you something. I am super proud of the players.
“Two men in the bac, the second for nothing, really. It’s annoying for the game that someone leaves for that. I have the right to be angry, but I am above and happy to accept the result now and continue the next thing.”
