Lloyd Glasspool and Julian Cash on historic Wimbledon triumph: ‘Absolutely incredible. It’s a dream come true’ | Tennis News
Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool made the history of Wimbledon by winning the double Wimbledon Men’s double on Saturday.
When Cash and Glasspool beat Rinky Hijikata and David Pel 6-2 7-6 (3) in the final on Center short, they have become the first entirely British pairing to win the title since Pat Hughes and Raymond Tuckey raised the trophy in 1936.
Jonny Marray, Neal Skupski and Henry Patten 12 months ago have all been victorious at home in Wimbledon in the past 15 years, but all with double foreigner partners.
“It was absolutely incredible. It is a dream come true and to be able to do it in front of all your fans at home, your friends, your family,” said Glasspool Sky Sports News.
“I did not feel too much pressure, I just felt a lot of confidence with all the matches that we had won in the past.”
A relatively new pair, Cash and Glasspool dominated the grass this summer. After titles in Queen’s and Eastbourne, they have now won 14 consecutive games.
“We only started playing together towards the end of last season. I think we are probably about nine months together now and it is progressing, honestly, every week and this season of herbs, above all, was incredible,” said cash Sky Sports News.
“We played every match that we could through the grass, picked up three trophies, all three in England,” he continued. “All experience from start to finish was very surreal.
“It just shows how much it means for many people around us, which is probably the most special part.”
Glasspool hopes that the double side of tennis can progress more. “I think that by fans, they like to look at doubles, they love to see it. I just think it could be pushed a little more, marketed a little more,” he said.
“People love to look at it, Wimbledon means that every year, the courts are packed by looking at the doubles, people want to see more.”
