Born in London, Bacon was inspired to leave her career in Longmans Publishing and became an actress after training at the Actors Institute. She quickly managed to play in several regional theatrical productions, making her debut on stage at the Harlow Theater Company before playing a role in famous productions at the Hampstead Theater, the Crucible Sheffield, Stratford East and the National Theater.
