Mandy Patinkin compares Israeli policy to ‘Princess Bride’ character
Mandy Patinkin calls the parallels between his most emblematic character and his most divided contemporary policy.
The actor discussed how the replacement of his performance as swashbuckling inigo montoya The princess’s bride Recalled to him the recent military actions of Israel in an interview published on Saturday.
“”The princess’s bride was on, and just as I walked in the play was this final scene of the film, “said the legend of Broadway The New York Times. “Where Inigo is sitting near the window with the man in black, and the man in black asks for inigo, would he like to be the next formidable pirate Roberts, and Inigo Montoya said these words:” I was in the vengeance sector for so long. Now that it’s over, I don’t know what to do with the rest of my life. “”

Patinkin, who is Jewish, then compared the crisis of Inigo’s identity after having avenged his father’s death to modern Israeli policies in Gaza.
“I ask the Jews to consider what this man Benjamin Netanyahu and his right -wing government make the Jewish people around the world”, Country Star said the Israeli Prime Minister. “They endanger not only the state of Israel, which I care deeply and which I want to exist, but endangering the Jewish population all over the world. To monitor what is happening, so that the Jewish people allow it to happen to children and civilians of all ages in Gaza, for any reason, is unconscious and unclean.”
He continued: “I ask you everywhere, all over the world, to spend time alone and to think:” Is it acceptable and lasting? How could you do you and your ancestors and you turn around and do you do it to someone else? “”
Elsewhere in the interview, Patinkin remembers crossing the tracks with several notable politicians in the early 1980s, when he was invited to sing the Israeli national anthem for a Soviet Jewish rally.
“I was on the podium with my baby,” he recalls. “Mario Cuomo was on my right. Ed Koch was sitting behind us and a foreigner was next to me. I did not know who he was, but he had an unpleasant atmosphere, and I took my son and I moved him away from my left – between foreigners and me – on my right arm, so my baby would be between Mario Cuomo and me, not between this man.”
Patinkin said that the “unpleasant” foreigner, who was, was the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations at the time, took the podium to speak. “I would often hear my parents say this sentence on the south side of Chicago, in the Jewish community:” It’s good for the Jews “or” it’s bad for the Jews “”, he said. “And in my mind, I heard:” It is the definition of what is bad for the Jews “- and I did not know this man. I just knew that he was a threat to my child. Later, I learned that this man was named Benjamin Netanyahu.”

Patinkin previously criticized the Netanyahu administration and reiterated that its political disagreements with Israeli policies are not equivalent to condemnations of the Jewish community. “I would like to emphasize that criticism of the national state of Israel is not the same as the criticism of Judaism, Jews or Israelis, in the same way that the criticism of the American government is not the same as criticizing the American people,” he wrote on X in 2021.
In 2020, Patinkin told a video for the new Israeli fund opposing the annexation of the West Bank. “The Israeli annexation of the West Bank is a disaster for the Israelis and the Palestinians,” he wrote on social networks at the time. “He threatens Palestinian rights and formalizes an unjust and unequal system. We must do our best to stop it.”
