Mikaela Mayer reveals how all-American super-fight with Claressa Shields could be made | Boxing News
Mikaela Mayer is a World Welter world champion, but she believes that a superfiainte with Claressa Shields, her former teammate and the undisputed heavyweight champion, can be made.
Mayer and Shields were teammates of the 2016 United States Olympic Team, with the former boxing at Lightweight and the last for medium weight for the second time in Brazil.
After having become a unified professional world champion with a super-pum weight, Mayer spent divisions to win the WBO Welterweight title.
Shields has had an undefeated stellar professional career, winning world championships in Super-Welter, Middle, Super-Middle and more recently heavy goods vehicles.
She became the first undisputed heavyweight champion in women’s boxing when she beat Danielle Perkins in February.
Nevertheless, Mayer thinks that if she continues to go up in weight and that Shields goes down, they can be matching in a super-combat of unexpected American women.
“I’m not super big, now that I settled in Welter weights but I could go to 154 pounds for the right fights,” said Mayer Sky Sports.
“I don’t want the easy path to have more distinctions. This is not really what I was. I want the biggest fights with the names. Fights that people are interested in seeing.
“If Claressed goes down to 154 pounds, I think that is something we both discussed creation.”
But the steps towards this should be taken as soon as possible. “I’m not going to hold my breath,” said Mayer.
“It’s his third fight [coming up] In heavy goods vehicles now, it’s her decision, well done to her, I have no problem with her. But the more heavy goods vehicles remain, the more I think it will be difficult to go down and I don’t know how long it will take it or what are its plans.
“So again, a lot of mobile pieces but certainly a fight that I would be ready to entertain.”
Mayer knows the shields well, of the professional circuit but above all their time together in the American amateur team.
“We are at the same height, I could be a little bigger than it does,” said Mayer.
“She would certainly have the size on me but I am pro. If I go to 154 pounds to challenge someone like Claressed Shields, I will be ready.
“I’m going to have my ready body and I will do the right things to go to ’54 and be strong and competitive at this weight.”
Mayer added: “It is also fast for this size. Most people has heavier weights like it is not as fast. So we can match each other because I come from lighter weights, I also have the speed. If it can reach 154 pounds, I think it will be a fairly evenly equal fight.
“It would be interesting because we have a story and we are friends, but in the end, we both want the big fights.
“I hope we can earn money together and leave this fight again friends.”
The Shields team recognizes that it is a possibility.
Its promoter Dmitry Salita said Sky Sports: “Claressed has always shown a desire to fight the best, whatever the challenge or sacrifice.
“On July 26 in Detroit, she faced Lani Daniels, champion of heavyweights, in what will be the first defense of her world title the undisputed heavy goods vehicles – making her the only American champion of American heavyweights, man or woman. She will head towards the ring with the hip -hop Rick Ross icon, which is not only a fight, but a cultural moment.
“As for a potential super-combat with Mikaela Mayer, we had some early general discussions, and this is certainly a possibility. Of course, the weight would be a key factor in the realization of this fight. And regardless of the opponent Claressed likes the United Kingdom and expressed his interest in returning-if the opportunity arises.”
