New Orleans Saints to sign free agent RB Cam Akers after minicamp invitation, per report
The veteran Cam Akers ball carrier is on his fifth team in three years. New Orleans’ saints should sign the old second round choice, according to Diana Russini of athletics, after welcoming it this month at Minicamp. He will join the franchise as a backup of Alvin Kamara, as well as the secondary return option Kendre Miller and the Recruit Devin Neal.
After his victory for the Super Bowl LVI, Akers lost his grip on the starting station with the Rams of Los Angeles in 2022 and rebounded around several lists. He experienced two separate relays with the Vikings of Minnesota and started two games last season for the Texans of Houston. Not since his last full season with the Rams, Akers rushes for more than 444 yards, but he posted a huge advantage at the start of his career.
“I’m always hungry and I’m young,” said Akers during the compulsory minicamp for saints. “I have a lot of tires on my tires, and I want to rewrite my story personally.”
Akers attended Minicamp Saints as a free agent without restriction. His last contract was a one -year contract of 1.175 million dollars which he initially signed with the Texans. The Vikings took the majority of his contract when he joined the team for the last 12 games of the 2024 season. Between the two teams, Akers managed 104 races for 444 yards and two affected. He also captured 14 assists for 68 yards and three scores.
“I am lucky to be able to have this opportunity,” said Akers. “I have experienced a lot in my career. I cannot let it affect this type of opportunities. So I go out and have a head on the right and attack these opportunities.”
After his selection with the 52nd choice at the NFL 2020 draft, Akers, a Florida state product, started five games with the Rams and was an instant contributor both on the field and as a receiver. He missed the first 17 weeks of the following season after tearing his Achilles tendon but rebounded in 2022 with a year of career on the way to a super Bowl crown.
“Cam is an experienced player,” said saints coach Kellen Moore. “He did a lot in this league. As you go through this, you always try to assess as many players as possible. So we had the impression that it was an excellent opportunity, and we are excited that he wanted to come here.”
For his career, Akers holds a count of 2,025 yards on the ground and 13 affected. This does not include the 432 additional yards and two scores which he recorded in three trips in the playoff series, two with the Rams and one with the Vikings.
