Padres’ Yu Darvish shows off full arsenal in encouraging season debut vs. Diamondbacks
The right -hander of San Diego Padres, Yu Darvish, made his seasonal debut on Monday against the Arizona Diamondbacks (Gametracker). Darvish, 38, had been sidelined by inflammation of the right elbow.
It was hardly a Darvish vintage outing, but it was something on which to rely for the decorated right -hander and a team of padres that sorely needed him. In 3 ⅔ sleeves, Darvish authorized two points, both won, on four safe strokes with five stick withdrawals and three balls on bullets. Of its 63 locations, 41 have made strikes.
At first, he flashed a vintage ball to eliminate the first striker he faced in Corbin Carroll:
As is generally the case with a Darvish start, he launched just about all existing areas – eight different offers, to be exact. He went to the curve a plurality of time, but that has only reached 22% of his total locations. He obtained 12 puffs on five different terrains, including five on the sweeper. As for Darvish’s quick ball, he hit 95.9 MPH and has an average of 95.1 MPH in the night. It is a complete tick on what his four runners did on average last season, and it is an encouraging sign to move forward.
Darvish had only made one appearance in the context of a rehabilitation assignment. He launched four rounds for the Triple-A affiliate of San Diego, offering 51 throws and holding the opposition to two points on two strokes and a walk. He withdrew four of the 14 strikers he faced in this match.
“It really comes from a physical point of view,” said manager Mike Shildt on Sunday. “We always have an open day on the calendar for Yu Darvish to start.”

Darvish, under contract through the 2028 campaign, has been limited to only 40 departures combined in the last two seasons since he finished eighth in voting Cy Young Award in 2022. He compiled an MPM of 4.09 (102 ERA +) and a withdrawal ratio at 3.37 over this duration. Darvish is, of course, at the end of an accomplished international career. He made five teams of stars and erased more than 33 victories above the replacement, according to the estimates hosted at Baseball Reference.
Darvish was one of the many notable padres starters on the shelf. San Diego remains without Joe Musgrove (outside for the season after Tommy John surgery), Michael King (shoulder inflammation) and Ryan Bergert (contusion of the forearm).
The Padres entered Monday with a file of 48-41 on the season, linking them with the Giants of San Francisco for the third and last point of Joker of the National League.
