PGA Tour: Brian Campbell snatches John Deere Classic victory in play-off after thrilling final round | Golf News
Brian Campbell won his second victory in the season’s playoffs on the PGA Tour by beating Emiliano Grillo to the first additional hole of John Deere Classic.
Campbell and Grillo both displayed the round of finals 67 at TPC Deere Run to finish the 18 sous and at the top of a congested ranking, where 14 players were separated by two shots with only nine holes to cover.
The pair returned to the 18th by four for a play-off, where Grillo failed to go up and down to save the peer from the back of the green and allowed Campbell to close the victory with a peer tap-in.
Victory follows Campbell’s victory at the Open of Mexico and sees him become the fifth player to have several PGA Tour titles this season, joining Scottie Scheffler, Rory Mcilroy, Sepp Straka and Ryan Fox.
Kevin Roy and David Lipsky finished a tie, with Max Homa two strokes in a part of fifth place which also contained Matt Kuchar and the former champion of the United States Lucas Glover.
How Campbell won the Play-Off victory in Illinois
Campbell seemed to have control of the tournament with three birdies in a section of four holes to start the nine back, only to give hope for the hunting pack with a double bogey in the 15th per four after finding trees.
Grillo had advanced when Campbell duplicate Bogey but carded a three-stroke Bogey in the 16th outth century, while Campbell was two-strokes in the 17th in the 17th and pair in the last to set the goal of the clubhouse.
An eight -feet birdie in the 17th feet withdrew the level of Grillo before a closing peer also saw it finished on 18 under Campbell, while Lipsky attached the head with an eagle in the 17th but hung its journey to the last en route to a fence bogy.
Campbell – which finished about 30 minutes before the last group – saw its approach in play -off finished about 15 feet from the flag, the American leaving his attempted Birdie alongside the hole before not speaking necessary for victory.
“I feel like I’m hitting superb putts,” said Grillo. “I gave my 100%. I played very well. I think I hit each fairway today, with the exception of that first in the playoffs. In bad luck, but that’s what it is. It’s golf. Sometimes you have to take what you get.”
