Rob Edwards: Middlesbrough appoint former Luton boss as new head coach to replace Michael Carrick | Football News

Middlesbrough appointed Rob Edwards as his new head coach for a three-year contract.

The 42 -year -old man, who left Luton in January, replaces Michael Carrick, who left Stadium Riverside earlier this summer after almost three years in charge.

Edwards would have refused the progress of other clubs, including Bristol City.

Edwards said to the club website: “It is a real privilege to have the opportunity to be a head coach of this big football club. It is something that is not lost for me, how big it is, how important it is and what it means for people. There is an incredible fans base.

“It was instantly that it was good for me and that it excited me. If I was going to come back, I wanted to come back to a place where we had a chance, and we have a very good chance here.

“We have a brilliant owner who historically gives his coaches the time, the support and the tools necessary to try to succeed. I can’t wait to start now.”

Edwards took Luton in the Premier League in his first season as a manager in 2022/23, but the hats were relegated after failing to stand on the last day of their first campaign on their return to the high flight.

He left Kenilworth Road in January with the 20th Hatters in the championship. They would later be relegated under the successor of Edwards, Matt Bloomfield, the last day of the championship in May.

Middlesbrough’s football chief Kieran Scott added: “Rob is someone I have known for a long time and I followed his development as a nearby coach.

“He made the story to Forest Green Rovers, and winning the Premier League promotion with Luton Town was a fantastic achievement.

“We had an exciting basin of candidates for this role, but we estimated that Rob was the show and was very impressed to meet him and listening to him to talk about his vision of the club.

“We are delighted that Rob has agreed to join us and look forward to the future.”
