Salford City friendly at York City abandoned following alleged racist abuse | Football News


North Yorkshire police called on witnesses after the abandonment of the York City pre-season after some of the players were subjected to racial abuses.

Salford boss Karl Robinson led his players out of the field to the LNER Community Stadium in the last stages of the match with the score level at 3-3 after being informed that his players had been targeted.

The York National League team confirmed that she was working closely with the North Yorkshire police in their investigation.

Police said that a 23 -year -old man had been arrested as part of the incident and called for witnesses to contact us.

They said the incident had followed a disturbance on the field towards the end of the match.

A club statement said: “The York City Football Club is horrified to learn the allegations of racial abuses for Salford City players during the pre-season match of this evening.

“The two clubs, alongside the match officials, decided to withdraw the two fields from the field at that time.

“York City condemns racism in all forms. We are holding with Salford to condemn this behavior in the strongest possible terms.

“The club is now working with North Yorkshire police to investigate allegations.

“We would like to thank Salford City for their cooperation in what was a deeply painful evening.”

League two, the Salford team, said in a statement: “The case was quickly reported to the authorities and the Salford team was withdrawn from the field by manager Karl Robinson.

“The incident is currently under investigation by York City and the local police.

“Salford City condemns racism in all forms, will always protect and defend its players and staff against any form of behavior of this type, and will condemn this evening behavior in the strongest possible terms.

“We would like to thank York City for his quick response to this incident.”
