Salford Red Devils 26-22 Castleford Tigers: Chris Hankinson’s 10-point haul helps end 13-game Super League winless streak | Rugby League News
The transport of 10 points by Chris Hankinson saw Salford breaking his 13 -game defeat sequence and only claiming his second victory for Betfred Super League of the season against Castleford without coach.
The Red Devils granted a brief respite from their current financial crisis while the trials in the second period of Hankinson – which also launched three conversions – and Esan Marsters saw them withdraw for a richly deserved 26-22 victory.
Castleford, who has ahead of head coach Danny McGuire after last week’s defeat against Huddersfield, placed new depths and faced a barracks of a travel fans while the minutes were turning on another painful defeat.
But in the afternoon was all about the revitalized hosts of Paul Rowley, who had sent an average of more than 42 points per game in a desperate campaign, but who tightened their grip after fighting the match in the last stages of the first half.
Rowley was stimulated by the short -term loan of Wakefield Olly Russell this week, while Joe Meloror and Loghan Lewis returned after long absences and the beginner Declan Murphy settled superbly in the back.
Case, which could themselves appeal to the rear adolescent Fletcher Rooney after a long absence, threatened to make it the same old story as Josh Simm broke out in the meters of the test line in the first half-minute.
But Salford resisted the early storm and was the first on the match sheet after 10 minutes when Jayden Nikorima combined with Marsters to send Ethan Ryan, before Simm finally pierced in the area to transport the level of Castleford.
Things started to go down for the hosts with the return of Lewis shortened by the head injury protocol before the quick feet of Daejarn Asi came to browse the defense of Salford, the conversion of Chris Atkin sending Six Claire to 10-4.
But Salford retaliated in the last three minutes of the first half, Harvey Wilson twisted through a gap in the defense of Castleford who flees, then a few moments later, Mellor crashed to give them a noisy advance from 16-10 half-time.
Asi jumped for his second after the pressure of Castleford at the start of the second half, which ATKIN duly converted into level, but Salford responded on 53 when Marsters expressed himself to restore their advantage.
A delicious Russell kick sent Hankinson for a test to stretch the advantage of Salford at 10 points on the hour mark, and Castleford rarely threatened to gather an answer until George Lawler jumped on a loose ball to bring visitors back to the four with two minutes on the chronometer.
But the Red Devils Rock should not be refused and when Zac Cini was stolen from the restart, they could begin to celebrate their first victory since a lonely triumph over Huddersfield in August.
