South Africa’s novel tactics against Italy provoke debate – head coaches react to the innovations | Rugby Union News
South Africa has given Italy a heavy 45-0 defeat in Gqeberha, but the new tactics used by the Springboks have divided opinion.
The Springboks deliberately conceded a scrum of kick -off of the match to make a statement against the Italians.
It was a piece that caused the head coach Gonzalo Quesada.
“Regarding the first action, I prefer to make no comments. Because I was really surprised, I did not take it well. They can beat us without needing to do this kind of tactic,” said Quesada.
“I think we have been extremely respectful in the past two weeks, with great humility coming to the ground, the country of the world champions.
“I don’t know if that was something we did or said who created this first blow, but I will only say that I was really surprised.”
South Africa innovated during the match. In general, they raised a man, like a line, to create a Maul, who in a case has set up a test.
Quesada congratulated this tactic. “They always have delicate and beautiful strikes of alignments,” he said.
“In this area, there is always something a little special, different, innovative to surprise the opposition. They tried this maul of the second phase. It’s a good idea because you have to react super quickly.
“As soon as the Maul is formed, if you remove it, you collapse a Maul.
“I think that is part of the very good job that they are making a step in front of other teams concerning innovation and good ideas and they have players for that.”
South Africa coach Rassie Erasmus revealed that he had designed this move from a team of schools under the age of 14.
“Many teams make different tactical movements and we have made a Maul in general with a guy we lift [to receive the pass]”Said Erasmus.” We have in fact seen a team of schools B of under 14 [in Paarl].
“You get all the advantages of an alignment if you lift a guy at general and it worked for us. But obviously now people will be alert for that.
“We have tried a few things and sometimes these things work and sometimes they don’t, and you have to take it on the chin if they don’t work.”
