Unpacking all those series finale deaths

This article contains spoilers for the final of the series of Calmar game.

In the end, Gi-Hun alias Player 456 (Lee Jung-Jae) lost Calmar game.

Netflix’s successful Korean drama has never been light and optimistic (euphemism of the century), but the series ended with a particularly dark note. Gi-Hun was not only died in the last round of the match, but he failed his mission to stop the game completely because, without his knowledge, this is a global operation.

So who ended up winning the second round of the match, and how did Gi-Hun died trying to stop him? Fuck yourself, because it is a wild ride.

After Gi-Hun received a knife by the man from the front (Lee Byung-Hun), he overturned the expectations by not killing the remaining opponents before the last lap to prove that humanity could be good. The flashbacks reveal that Front Man finally won his own match by taking the coward and shooting everyone while they were sleeping.

This meant that everyone survived the evening to play in the last match, Sky Squid Game, which forced them to push at least a competitor of high concrete columns for three laps. The tense game finally resisted Gi-Hun, the newborn of the new 222 player, aka Jun-Hee (Jo Yu-Ri), and the baby’s father, Myung-Gi (Yim Si-Wan).

At this stage, Jun-Hee was dead (with everyone) and Myung-Gi entirely transformed into a villain. He was paranoid about Gi-Hun’s offer to sacrifice himself to save him at the same time and the baby, so he started to think that Gi-Hun and Jun-Hee had a romantic connection outside the games. He lost his head and revealed that he wanted to kill his own baby to win the Grand Prix. Gi-Hun was disgusted and realized that he could not let Myung-Gi win after all.

Since Gi-Hun had promised Jun-Hee that he would protect the baby from his life, he did exactly that. After defeating and accidentally killed Myung-Gi in a desperate and brutal knife fight at the top of the last tower, Gi-Hun officially started the last lap and sacrificed his own life, falling behind the tower. Before falling, he gave his last words to the VIPs he knew that we were looking at: “We are not horses. We are human. Humans are …”

But Gi-Hun did not finish his statement before sacrificing himself. What was the end of his sentence? “Humans are … good?” “Humans are … better than that?” “Humans are …” What?! We will never know, because not only has the front front confirmed that Gi-Hun died on the impact, but the whole island exploded via self-destruction protocols before the Coast Guard arrives could not discover any proof of the game. Gi-Hun is really dead and its body will never be found.

The match finally ended with only the living baby, which means that the new 222 player won. While the man before picked up the baby to evacuate, his brother Jun-ho (Wi ha-jun) finally infiltrated the island and confronted it from afar. Jun-Ho pulled through the empty VIP room window and targeted his weapon on his brother, shouting on him, but could not press the relaxation. The two men escaped safely on the island before he breathes, and they never saw each other again. So much for the closure.

After a six -month jump, the show revealed where everyone met. The pink goalkeeper No-Eul (Park Gyu-Young) managed to save the 246 (Lee Jin-Uk) from the game, and he brought together his daughter, who is no longer sick. No-Eul also obtained advice that her own daughter could still be alive, so she gave herself up for China in the hope of her own emotional reunion.

Meanwhile, Woo-Seok (Jun Suk-Ho) finally left prison after having served a sentence for entering Captain Park’s house (Oh Dal-Su) (because Jun-Ho could not obtain evidence to empty his crimes-brutal). Jun-Ho also revealed that Gi-Hun’s money had been stolen from the hotel, but he returned later to find the baby player 222 delivered to his apartment with a message that says “winning” and a credit card linked to an account containing 4.56 billion won. The man with the front followed his promise that the winner would get the price, even if it was a baby.

The affairs of the man before have not yet been finished. He went to Los Angeles to deliver the remaining price of Gi-Hun to his daughter Ga-Yeong (OJ Ah-in), and to tell him that his father died. The man before him also gave a bloody green track jacket from Gi -Hun – we do not know what she was thinking of this disturbing gift.

There was just a happy ending in the middle of all this destiny and this sadness, because Sae-Byeok (Hoyeon) obtained his wish beyond the grave. His little brother Cheol (Park Si-Wan) finally found his mother, thanks to the mother of Sang-Woo (Park Hae-Soo) (Park Hye-Jin), who took care of Cheol after Gi-Hun gathered them in season 1. Yay for that!

But the final of the series gave a last shock before its end, to really bring home that the whole mission of Gi-Hun to destroy the game was everything for nothing. While the man with the front was taken to the streets of downtown Los Angeles, he heard a familiar sound. He rolled the car window to see an American recruiter (played by Cate Blanchett in a surprise cameo) playing ddakji with a desperate man in an alley.

While the recruiter was locking his eyes with the man before, she smiles at him – which implies that she knows exactly who he is. The face of the man before never changes, so it is difficult to say if he knew that an American version of the games existed or if it is a shocking achievement for him. The series ended with a man from the front moving away while the American recruiter slapped the desperate man, who asked to leave. The Squid game is global and Gi-Hun has failed to destroy it.

At least his death was not totally In vain, since he saved the baby, right? And on this depressing thought, that’s how Calmar game finished.
